StatementAfter a lifetime of pursuing art, I still start over from the beginning with every new piece. It is maddening, but also beautiful because I always seem to find my way to a good solution. For me that personifies the idea that the experience is infinitely more valuable than the end result.
Returning from an age of adventure and sunset hunting, I have once again entered into the world of art with a new approach and a fresh perspective. Chasing the ephemeral with an appetite for the sublime, I find myself focusing on the beauty and grandeur of our often awe-inspiring sunsets as a route for me to communicate my internal self. |
About |
Joshua Demain’s paintings attempt to capture the beauty and magnitude of our glorious skies and establish a social commentary between awesome nature and other more humanistic elements, such as isolated rocks or lonely light poles. Whatever the case, questions about the human condition seem to gently rise to the surface, but invariably find themselves swimming merrily amongst a picturesque landscape.

History |
Joshua began studying art at Pinellas County Center for Arts at Gibbs High School in 1993. By 2000 he had worked his way through much of the UAA art department and moved to Florida to attend Ringling College of Art and Design, where he earned his BFA. Moving to Montclair State University, New Jersey, Joshua continued his studies in a graduate program and achieved an MFA in 2006.
He spent two years in Canada after grad school, and has been back home in Alaska ever since trying to get back in touch with who he is as an artist; always on the lookout for the perfect sky and a taste of inspiration. Historically, Joshua has had an emphasis on oil painting, but his interests are diverse. He recently began exploring soft pastels and acrylics and is excited about the fancy new set of watercolours he picked up. Pottery, woodworking, and miniature figurine painting are some hobbies that occupy his time. |
